Artists transform cathedral with spectacular light show as city celebrates festival of colour

A spectacular sound and light show lit up the city of Durham as 35 British and international artists took part in the UK's largest light festival.

In one stunning installation, Durham Cathedral was encased with pages from the Lindisfarne Gospels while the statue of the Marquess of Londonderry became a stunning piece of art as it was transformed into an 'I love Durham' snowdome.

The Durham Lumiere which takes place over four days, saw breathtaking illustrated pages of the Lindisfarne Gospels across the 330ft span of Durham Cathedral

Projection artist Ross Ashton collaborated with composer and arranger Robert Ziegler and Imagination sound designer John del Nero, to create a twelve-minute son et lumiere.

The festival which runs from November 17-20 will see more artists illuminate the landmarks, river, bridges and streets of the Durham. Artworks range from large-scale projections, to neons, to installations using the latest LEDs.

This year's festival includes a collaboration with light festivals in Poland and Estonia, as well as four pieces created by artists from the North East.

Newcastle design studio Deadgood created a colourful installation which saw rainbow lights covering scaffolding across a bridge in the medieval city.

The biennial festival which began in 2009 attracts thousands of visitors to the city who come to watch the spectacular.
