A ray of sunshine: The Queen shows her thrifty side by wearing her yellow royal wedding outfit again in Australia

Great role model: The Queen wearing the Angela Kelly designed dress on Sunday, left, and with the coat made to match it, at the Royal Wedding

While Prince Andrew continues to clock up the air miles and thrust his daughters into the limelight so that they get security protection, it is refreshing to see that the Queen is doing her bit in these recession-hit times.

The monarch has recycled the primrose yellow dress she wore to the Royal Wedding in April during her trip to Australia.

The crepe wool dress with a matching coat and hat was designed by the Queen's personal assistant, Angela Kelly, especially for her grandson's wedding.

She was credited with sparking a revival for the colour yellow when she chose the outfit for the spring wedding.

With the temperatures much warmer in Australia, the coat had been left at home.

The Queen wore the outfit on Sunday when she attended a service in Canberra at the historic St John's Church.

More than 1,000 people had lined the streets ahead of the service in the hope of catching a glimpse of their head of state. When the royal couple arrived, the crowds cheered and clapped.

Following the lead: The Duchess of Cambridge at Zara Phillips' wedding, left, in a coat she also wore five years before for Laura Parker Bowles' nuptials

Designer frock: Catherine wore the same green Diane Von Furstenberg dress to Zara's pre-wedding party, left, as she did in Los Angeles earlier that month

The famously thrifty Queen is known for recycling her outfits - she has often asked Angela Kelly and her team of seamstresses to update the decorations on gowns rather than making new versions.

Other royals have taken her lead and the Duchess of Cambridge is the latest convert.

The coat she wore to Zara Phillips' wedding to England rugby player Mike Tindall was the same one she wore to Laura Parker Bowles' nuptials in 2006.

An old favourite: The Duchess of Cornwall also wore the same dress to Zara's wedding, left, as she had to her daughter Laura's in 2006

Catherine's green Diane Von Furstenberg pre-wedding party dress had also been worn before, in Los Angeles earlier that month.

The Duchess of Cornwall also wore the same Anna Valentine outfit to both weddings.

As well as inspiring the women in her family to get the most out of their clothes, the Queen's thriftiness has also had an effect on her eldest son.

Prince Charles has suggested that he might save the taxpayers some money by turning Buckingham Palace into a 'government hotel and centre for events' while he relocates Court to Windsor Castle when he becomes King.
