No more Miss Girl Next Door for Coleen Rooney in her flamenco-style frock horror at Wayne's 26th birthday

Mrs Rooney, 25, had also opted for a professional makeover by make-up artist Sadie Day, with her hair swept up into an extravagant bun.



As far as Wayne Rooney was concerned, the dress code for his 26th birthday party was casual.

But wife Coleen doesn't readily turn down a chance to put her glad rags on.

She arrived at a Manchester Chinese restaurant in a pillarbox-red lace Philip Armstrong dress which showed off her heavy Dubai-acquired tan to full advantage.

It was in marked contrast to the simple outfit she wore for her own 20th birthday party in 2006 – the year after she was chosen to appear in British Vogue and editor Alexandra Shulman praised her 'brilliant sense of style'.

Fashionistas were less impressed with Sunday night's appearance, but Mrs Rooney praised designers Armstrong and Tony Burke. On Twitter, she wrote: 'Thank you so much Philip and Tony love my dress!!! X x x'.

By contrast, her husband chose a low-key outfit of dark shirt, jacket and jeans. But the Manchester United star probably didn't feel much like celebrating since hours earlier he and his teammates had lost 6-1 to Manchester City.

To make matters worse, invited guests at the Wings restaurant included two of the victorious City stars – his England colleagues Gareth Barry and Joe Hart.

Unsurprisingly the striker looked glum as he arrived later that evening following his team's stunning defeat.

Joining the couple were Rooney's England teammate Peter Crouch and his model wife Abbey.

During her holiday in the UAE with her parents and son Kai, Coleen had been excitedly tweeting designers Philip Armstrong and Tony Burke about her dress.

And when she finally put it on, she was full of praise for the designers.

Ahead of the game, Coleen was optimistic and tweeted her husband: 'Good luck Wayne Rooney for match today. Get a birthday goal.'

As well as Wayne's birthday, it was some quality time for the couple after spending the past week apart.

Wayne stayed behind in the UK while Coleen and their 23-month-old son Kai went to Dubai with her parents Colette and Tony McLoughlin.

During her vacation, Coleen posted photos of little Kai on a sunset desert safari in the Dubai dunes and of herself smoking a shisha pipe.
